Astronomy vs. Astrology

Astrology has little in common astronomy. Astronomy is a science. Astrology is not. Astrology claims to study the effect heavenly bodies have on human events. Astrologers believe that all thing in the cosmos are connected to one another, and that by tracking astronomical phenomena they can learn things about human events. Astrologers are known for believing that the position of the stars during birth has an effect on each person’s personality traits. This popular form of astrology is well known to most people in the form of the Horoscope.

Astrology is considered by the scientific community to be nothing more than a ‘psuedoscience’, and the Jordan Planetarium shares this view. The findings of astrology cannot be demonstrated scientifically.

The Horoscope

The constellations, especially the zodiac constellations, are thought in astrology to play an important role in determining the course of a given person’s life. Most people know their ‘sign’; the constellation which the sun is in on their birthday. What most people don’t realize is that due to the precession of the earth over time (the ‘wobble’ of the axis upon which the Earth spins), the dates most modern horoscopes use have shifted out of phase with the actual stars. Modern horoscopes also fail to take into account the fact that the Sun passes through the constellation Ophiuchus, because they are based on an antique model of the stars.

To illustrate these flaws, we have devised a simple test. Select the description which you feel best describes you and click on it, and you will be taken to a page showing both the traditional sign corresponding to those traits, as well as the traditional and actual dates for that sign.
